28 July extra: Conservative hold seat in Wychavon

One further result to add from 28 July: the Tories unsurprisingly hung on to the Droitwich West seat with only a small reduction of their vote.  The entry of UKIP and the Liberal Democrats in a seat neither contested at the local elections barely caused a dent in Tory vote, although there was a significant reduction for Labour of over 14%.

The Conservatives have had control of the district council since 1999 and currently have 39 of 45 Wychavon councillors.

28 July: Lib Dems increase vote share and take a seat from Tories

It was another good night for the Liberal Democrats, who increased their vote share across the four council seats contested, strengthening their hold on two seats and taking one from the Tories in Cornwall.

The Lib Dems took the Cornish council seat of Newlyn & Goonhaven by 13 votes.  They hadn't even contested the seat at the local elections and their victory here occurred alongside a collapse in the Conservative vote as well as that of the Cornish Mebyon Kernow party.

They also held on to Carshalton Central, seeing off a challenge from the Conservatives, whose vote increased at the expense of UKIP, whose post-Brexit downward trend continued.

Although Labour hung on to a seat in Haringey, once again demonstrating their current strength in the capital, it was another bad night.  The party lost more than 20% of their vote share in Newport St Julians as the widow of Ed Townsend, whose death brought about the by-election, turned a one-vote majority last time out into a landslide this time, the Liberal Democrats securing more than 50% of the vote.

Lib-Dems Come Close to Over-Turning Huge Tory Majority in The Hangers & Forest

In a by-election in East Hampshire caused by the death of Conservative councillor Judy Ounslow, voters went to the polls, unusually, on a Tuesday, and the Liberal Democrats continued their excellent local by-election form of late by almost pulling off a stunning victory in The Hangers & Forest.

The Lib Dems didn't contest the seat in the local elections, yet only missed out here by 9 votes, gaining 43.6%, while the Tories saw their vote reduced by 23.7%.

It's a result that suggests that recent Lib Dem successes in the south of England are no fluke and that the party is once again beginning to re-emerge as an electoral force, at least in some areas of the country.  They clearly ate heavily into both Conservative and Labour totals, with the latter reduced to a mere 17 votes, beaten into fourth place by the Justice & Anti-Corruption candidate.

Council by-elections 22 July: Lib Dem Gain from Tories in Northampton

There were holds in nine of the ten council by-elections contested last night, but in the other the Liberal Democrats continued their impressive recent form by taking Northampton Westone from the Conservatives.  The Lib Dems saw their vote rise by 36.4%.  Although this was partly earned by a reduction in the Labour vote (a recent feature of Lib Dem successes), the Tories saw their vote share drop by 28.7%.

Other features:

- Labour held Hackney Central with an increased share of the vote, largely at the expense of the Greens.  Labour also increased its share of the vote in Reading Southcote, though there was a very low turnout in both of these seats.

- The UKIP vote fell in all of the four seats it contested last time.  This ranged from a 4% fall in Tandridge (Warlington West) to a 6.7% in the South Staffordshire ward of Great Wyrely Town.

- With the exception of their loss to the Lib Dems in Northampton, and to an extent their performance in Reading Southcote, the Conservative vote held pretty steady and marginally increased in places.
